Sometimes the hardest part is just getting out the door.

So on Saturday morning here was the official weather forecast to which we awoke:

Snow/Ice. Creation of black ice is expected. Extremely dangerous driving and walking conditions. Motorists advised to avoid driving. Public advised not to venture outdoors unless really necessary.

That last line is a pretty glowing endorsement for our race, right?!

Anyway as many of you of course know, we got a bunch of last minute cancellations at the end of last week. (I guess everyone was watching the recent weather and forecasts a bit more closely than us.)

I prerode the course on Friday night with lights and have to say I was a bit shocked. I found large portions of the course covered with 20-30 cm of fresh powdery snow. In a few places snowdrifts were more than a half meter deep. Needless to say there were going to be places where we were going to have to push our bikes. I hurried home and planned a late evening reroute to avoid the deepest sections. 

When we awoke on Saturday morning to -4°C, freezing rain, and the above forecast, we got a few more texts and phone calls. We told everyone we spoke with that we would be riding no matter what and expected clear skies by race time. But at the same time, we would not be offended if anyone exercised caution and decided to stay at home (following the national weather service recommendation.) Essentially we advised restraint and reasoning (unfamiliar concepts to us), yet hoped someone would join us anyway (even though we didn't really expect it.)

Well, by noon it was sunny and -2°C (although the clear skies didn't last long.)

At 13:05 we set out, as planned: one woman, one man. A fairly small turnout, still representing two nationalities. :)

The freezing rain had knocked down the powdery snow a bit - making it slightly easier to navigate - and gave a nice crust on top of fresh snow; but unfortunately turned some of the packed truck tire tracks to ice. In the end the trails were much more fun to ride than just before on Friday night, and the rerouting worked well. (Everything became rideable, but frequent stops and restarts made for a daunting challenge.) It made for slow going through a good bit of deep snow, a recently plowed but still loose climb, one amusingly deep snow drift, and a couple of icy wind-swept sections. 

It was surprisingly tiring and a lot of work for such a slow pace, but a great ride we were happy to have conquered.

And in the end we have something of a new de facto set of single speed champions for now (with at least the printed champion t-shirts being tied to today's running of the race.)

We'll have to give credit to Cory and Veronika for getting off their butts and venturing out into the formidable conditions. 

Plus, as an amusing aside to the hardest part being 'getting out the door' the only injury was to Cory, who stepped out the door and fell down the icy concrete stairs when he was going to check the snow conditions just before the start. Heavily bruised leg, elbow, ribs, and shoulder didn't really deter. But, he was later happy to be pedaling with a studded rear tire! :)

So we missed all of you, and now will be eating goulash for every meal for the next week or so. But we still have some prizes and medals from our generous sponsors that we would like to share with everyone. 

We hope to try to offer another chance to ride together and compete by the end of the year, but we know how unrealistic that sounds around the holidays. What we may just do is set a few times over the next couple of weeks and a simple course near Prague (I'm thinking Točna.)

Either come ride with us to track your time, or do it by yourself and send us your GPS file and a matching timestamped photo of you on your single speed to be crowned the 2012 Czech National Single Speed Time Trial National Champion.

I'm dreaming of a white MČRSS!

So time has come once again, we are in December already and dreaming of MČRSS 2012!

As we mentioned earlier, the race moves this year just into western Bohemia and the mini-village of Řeřichy - Why? - Because we have a small base there (a family chata), it's a nice area, and lastly because it is almost impossible for non-Czechs to pronounce... 

In short: We meet on the 15th of December at around 11:00 at our little house in the village of Řeřichy. Because nobody, not even the locals know exactly where it is, we'll hang a flag on our fence, which when passing through the village you actually can't miss. (We are actually just the second house from the northern edge of the village.) The track will be announced as usual, just before the start, but can be previewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QlXH6hpuVc and for those who struggled in the past with Cory's precise markings, this time it will not be so meandering, but a relatively regular loop - or two :)

It looks like the mud should be mostly frozen over, and we might even get a little taste of snow! :)

As always, we will start on time and if you are late, you'll have to catch us on the track! :) The race is now scheduled for 13:00. Our estimate: greyhounds will finish in 60-90 minutes, normal people in about two hours or so. If it is really cold (it probably will be), riding the second loop might only be required by those riders in the leading positions - so that they deserve a win ....

Řeřichy is in the valley, but there can be some good winds, the weather is similar to Vysočina. In the surrounding woods, where we'll mostly ride it is slightly warmer, but even so, take both warm pants and clothes!

Beside the little house, which we will use to escape the cold, there could also be tents for any people that want to stay with us through Sunday, or if you will be less adventurous you can just sleep inside the chata with us where it will be toasty!
Anyway grandmother Jana promised to cook stew for everyone, and some sausage will also found, plus something tea to drink and beer too will be around!

A last reminder:
It is a MTB event in the forest, it is NOT anything of an official action. You do ride at your own risk, so be careful, don't need to overdo your power and just enjoy it :)

Let us know who is coming and who wants to stay with us in the chata, and we will make sure to have plenty of tea, gulaš, and warm blankets.
And don't worry, between the campfire in the yard and the fire in the stove, everyone will have no problem warming up after the ride.
Plus as always, presents for everyone who comes out to ride.

Unfortunately...

Unfortunately due to an unforeseen medical issue, we have a conflict with our existing plan, and so will have to postpone the MCRSS race until December.

Will you still be able to join us on December 15th?
We hope this new date suits you and the change doesn't cause too much trouble.

(And don't worry, we'll have extra mulled wine and firewood to keep warm.)

November 2012

OK, mark your calendars! 

This year's race is slowly being planned again. 

Tentative schedule is for either the weekend of November 3-4 or November 24-25, and the location the hills and forest to the west around our rural chata in Řeřichy. We will provide basic primitive lodging, a place for those who want to camp, a warm stove inside, a campfire, and some warm goulash. 

There are a lot of good relaxed/mixed trails there which should allow a straightforward course with maybe 2 or 3 laps. 

We'll see. 

Let us know if you will be able to come. 
Families welcome. 
We'll have a warm place to hang out during the race, and maybe even a kids' single speed race.

We wish you lots of good riding, and at least a few more warm days before summer slips away.
